Magnesium alloys exhibit significant potential as biomedical implant materials; however, their clinical application is largely hindered by rapid and uncontrolled degradation in physiological environments. This research proposes the development of a novel hybrid coating system combining Microarc Oxidation (MAO) and Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) to address this limitation. The MAO process provides an initial protective layer with improved basic corrosion resistance, while MOF nanoparticles—synthesized to be smaller than the MAO micropores—function as smart nanocontainers. These nanocontainers encapsulate corrosion inhibitors and enable stimulus-responsive (e.g., pH-triggered) controlled release for self-healing purposes. In collaboration with National Taiwan University (NTU), this project aims to optimize the MAO process, synthesize multi-functional MOF-derived nanocomposites, and fabricate the MOF/MAO hybrid coating on magnesium alloys. The coated specimens will be systematically evaluated for their corrosion resistance, microstructural morphology, and underlying protection mechanisms. The expected outcome is a durable, self-healing, multi-functional coating generation that significantly enhances the viability of magnesium alloys for biomedical applications.
